Friends of East 3rd Street Park
What's
New: March 2001
Our official park dedication date and ribbon cutting will
be on the morning of July 4, 2001. Mayor Grimes will be there. The
exact time and more details will follow. Also, look for FOETSP in
the Upfront section of the March Frederick Magazine. We will
see a lot of activity in the park in March. The building porch roof
has been removed so that the work on the round plaza can begin. A
tree will be planted in the plaza this month as well. Clark Welding
has ordered the materials for the wrought iron fence which will set
off our East Third Street Park beautifully. |
 |
| This is an exciting and eventful spring for FOETSP;
with continued community support, we can meet our deadline. We have
now raised over $89,000 and need $16,000 to finish this project. The
engraved brick campaign is going very well. All brick orders that
FOETSP receives by March 31 will be guaranteed installation by the
park dedication date. |
Mayor James S. Grimes officially opened
the playground portion of the park at a ribbon cutting ceremony on
January 18, 2001. More photos. |
|
Please tell your friends, organizations, businesses, etc. that
they still have an opportunity to buy a brick. This truly is a unique
opportunity to have their name recorded in historic Frederick.
We received the coins from the FSK Mall fountain last month, which
came to over $500. The park is going to be beautiful, it will be
a unique green space that will enhance the City. Some of our members
are working tirelessly to bring in money. With one final push, we
will meet our goal! Please reply to the group with any news, tips
or suggestions. Thanks!

About FOETSP
The Friends of East Third Street
Park (FOETSP) is an all volunteer group working in cooperation with the
city of Frederick, Maryland to revitalize the East Third Street Park and
expand its facilities for all to enjoy. The park is located in Frederick's
historic district and is surrounded by St. John's Cemetery to the north,
East street to the east, and residences on all sides. We are fortunate
that this green space has been preserved through the years and is available
for everyone to enjoy. The park has fallen into disrepair over the years.
It has outdated play equipment and a surface that doesn't meet today's
safety standards for children.

|
Currently, there are no benches in the park and the shaded area of the
park building needs light. We envision a new future for the park. Our
goal is not only to create an inviting, interesting, and safe playground
for children, but also to design a park that is used by people of all
ages. Plans include a scenic picnic and resting area. We anticipate that
everyone in the residential and commercial areas surrounding the park
and visitors to Everedy Square and Shab Row will enjoy and use the park.
The Plan
The park renovation will take
place in two phases. Phase I includes work on the path, plaza, and playground
area. Groundbreaking began in August 2000. The new playground and brick
path are currently being installed. Three picnic tables for the plaza,
trash receptacles, and several trees will be put in place as part of Phase
I.
Phase II includes wrought iron fencing,
arches, flowering trees and shrubs, park benches, replacement of declining
trees, and building improvements. As soon as funds are available we will
begin installing park benches and the wrought iron fence with wrought
iron arches at entryways. This will replace the existing chain link fence.
New lighting for the park will improve security and aesthetics. Phase
II will be completed in fall 2001. We are very grateful to Richard Pais,
from Environmental Quality Resources, Inc. who contributed the original
concept plan for the park and to Michelle Payne Ryan who designed the
concept plan.

Fundraising
The renovation of the park is a cooperative effort of the FOETSP,
the City of Frederick, and our many generous contributors. The total
cost of the project is $105,000. To date, FOETSP has raised $80,000.
We are well over the halfway mark and are looking for additional
contributors to help us complete the project.
The City of Frederick contributed the large play unit (see above).
The rest of the new equipment is being purchased through a Community
Development Block Grant (CDBG). They are also contributing three
picnic tables, and all of the labor (except for the fence installation).
After the park renovation is complete, the city will maintain
the park as they do for all of the 56 parks within the city limits.
That is 400 acres of park property to maintain!
